Northwestern Prison Education Program PSA: 2021

Directed, produced, and edited by Jude Appleby in 2021, this broadcast PSA was created for Northwestern University and aired nationally during the Big Ten primetime football opener. The film highlights the Northwestern Prison Education Program (NPEP), an initiative bringing accredited liberal arts education to incarcerated students in Illinois.

Combining documentary-style cinematography with emotionally grounded storytelling, the PSA was designed to introduce a broad national audience to the impact of higher education within correctional facilities. Through intimate imagery and concise narrative structure, the project emphasizes education as a tool for transformation while reflecting Northwestern’s broader mission of access, equity, and academic engagement beyond the traditional campus environment.
